Castro is on the 40-man roster but hasnt played for the Phils this season. The 25-year-old has spent most of the year on the minor league injured list. He hasnt hit well in 23 minor league contests and didnt make much of an impact in 14 MLB games for the Phils last year. A switch-hitter with some defensive flexibility, Castro played in 180 games over parts of three seasons with the Pirates. Philadelphia acquired him in a one-for-one swap for left-hander at the 2023 deadline. Falter has been a decent back-end starter for the Bucs this year, working to a 4.02 ERA acro s 21 appearances. Even though he wouldnt have had a path to a rotation spot in Philly, that trade worked out squarely in Pittsburghs favor. The Phils could recall Castro and place him on the major league 60-day injured list if they want to open a 40-man roster spot at some point. Its also po sible they simply release him to clear a 40-man opening. This is Castros last minor league option year, so the Phils would need to carry him on next years MLB roster or place him on waivers.
